International Culture Course was established in 1996. Our goal was to foster students who contribute to the world in the 21 century.
We put stress on English education in this course. First year students learn 13 lessons a week.
The average lessons for first year students is about six in Japan. Assistant Language Teachers (A.L.T.s) help students learn in a class of twenty students. The number of the students in one class is usually about 40 in Japan. Two A.L.T.s are working hard at our school. They are full-time teachers. One A.L.T. who works at a high school nearby help us on a part time basis. They teach English and supervise E.S.S. (English Speaking Society) club and exchange students. The students must study English very hard. They have seven learning three times in one week.
Students who don't like learning English are in trouble. Almost all of the students develop their command of English and pass the English qualification test. They are highly motivated. English marks are attached much importance in entrance examinations of this course. This course has a few students returning from overseas. Returnee children sometimes find that they no longer fit into the Japanese "different". Thus they are often not welcomed in Japanese schools. But our school is eager to have them because our aim is to nurture students who contribute not only to Japan but also to all over the world.
The first year students have to participate in an English seminar at the end of July. This seminar is held ina rural area which is called "British Hills". Kanda Gaigo University owns the building of British Hills and lets the orders use it during the vacation of the university. "British Hills" are wide and beautiful. It is a reproduction of a village in the Middle Ages. Much furnitures is imported from England. The staffs all are from English speaking countries. Once the students enter the area of British Hills, they have to communicate in English. The lessons are taught in English. The students feel as if they are in England.
The students have an opportunity to go abroad in the second year. A city near San Francisco is the place where they learn various things. This experience aims at deepening their understanding of other cultures through home stay in other countries. Some students develop the ability to communicate with people in the U.S. Some of them are motivated to speak English after they return to Japan. The home stay experience is held from the end of June to the middle of August.
In this way, the students of International Cultural Course have many opportunities to develop their ability of English. They hope to be in touch with students in other countries.
